Who Needs Poetry?
This New York Times opinion piece, taps into many of my thoughts and fears as I read and prepare to teach poetry. Certainly, much of the world functions quite well without reading or studying poetry. Certainly, many of my students would rather do neither. But, oh, the hope exists each year that I will find one or even two who love the written word as I do. Logan suggests that, "Poetry will never have the audience of “Game of Thrones” — that is what television can do. Poetry is what language alone can do." The power of that language keeps me reaching each year for my audience of one or two! Indeed, we all need poetry.
