Another Day - David Levithan
Levithan, David. Another Day. New York: Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2015.
Rhiannon finds herself caught in a world that she could never have imagined for herself. She thinks she loves Justin, but he is certainly not an easy boyfriend. She is never sure if she is doing just the right thing. Until that one day when they have a perfect day. He seems genuinely interested in her, her hopes and her dreams. She is perplexed but overjoyed. Her world is rocked when she discovers that she was really with A that day. Each day A wakes up in a different body and has to navigate the life in which he finds himself. He doesn't have parents or long term friends until, that is, he falls for Rhiannon and for the first time lets someone into his crazy life. Rhiannon is naturally disbelieving at first, but gradually finds herself falling for the person that is A. She loves him, but struggles with all of the ways in which he appears to her and the limitations of their relationship.
In a companion book to his Every Day Levithan continues to explore the delicate balance between gender and person, love and attraction. Do we fall in love with a body, a gender, a personality, or some combination of the three. A and Rhiannon experience the balance in markedly different ways, trying to find a way to meet in the middle. This book can certainly be read independently of its companion book, which is nice.
Absolutely timely, this title that will engage its readers in difficult questions of gender and sexuality in a non threatening way. Levithan invites his readers to be kinder, gentler, and more thoughtful when considering others whose life experiences may differ from their own. He does not offer simple solutions to the problems faced by Rhiannon and A just as there are often no simple solutions in life. I, and my readers, will surely be looking forward to more of the story. I wonder if it will come?
